For July’s meeting Susan Southworth (Chair) managed to book Sara Rowbotham to be a guest speaker for the latest CLP meeting after meeting with her at an event earlier in the year, Sara told us about the Rochdale grooming scandal and the role her team, Rochdale Crisis Intervention Team, played trying to fight for the sexually exploited girls and boys to get justice and the hellish pathway to eventual prosecution, Sara told us how the BBC Drama ‘Three Girls’ in which Sara is played by Maxine Peake (Actress and Labour Activist) was good expose about the case but also neglected to indicate to the viewers how many girls and also boys had been abused, She spoke of how White Supremacy had tried to take the story and manipulate it into a tool against UK Muslims and request to use Sara as a “Poster Girl” to induce hate. Anyone else would allow this stress to take over their life and the PTSD she had to overcome nearly did, however Rowbotham found a way to transform her life and overcome this massive hurdle that exploitation had become in her life, by becoming a Labour councillor for Middleton and eventually being chosen as deputy leader of Rochdale council. Following her talk She answered questions from the audience, one of which raised the issue on protecting children from exploitation through technology and how Parents didn’t understand modern technology like the young people do, making the internet open to abuse children.
