Richard Gold, resident and Labour Candidate from Sedgley Ward in Bury South and Northwest Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) education membership, attended Bury North CLP’s meeting and gave members training on Anti-Semitism. Richard, who is a friend of Bury North Labour, managed to make an extremely difficult subject both interesting and eye opening while somehow being able to inject a little humour to the proceeding. This training had been booked in advance, however ironically the Home Office released a damning report on the rise of hate crime in the UK just the week prior to this training evening.
The report from the Home Office explained that between 2016/17 and 2017/18, religious hate crime increased by 40 per cent (up 2,387 to 8,336 offences). Richard also showed members examples of racially aggravated cyber bullying aimed at Jewish Labour MPs, which appeared to target females more aggressively. Richard was thanked by different members for attending and providing insight into the frightening trend of racial harassment and Muslim members commented how this is a trend also effecting the Muslim community.
Richard had advised that Jewish people on the receiving end of abuse, could contact the Police for severe incidents on 101/999 and also with the Community Security Trust (CST).
